A Fine Louis XVI-Style Mahogany and Bronze Dore' "Envelope" Table, c. 1870, by Paul Sormani, Paris, the lock engraved "P. Sormani, Rue Charlot, Paris", the square top bound by gilt-bronze moldings and divided into four parts, each triangle unfolding to reveal a baize- lined playing surface, the frieze ornamented by pierced mounts and containing opposing drawers, the fluted legs ending in thimble sabots, height 29.25in., width 23 in., depth 23 in. E1500/2500 Note: Paul Sormani is known for his fine copies of Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture and decorations. He exhibited at the 1849, 1855, 1862, 1867, and 1878 exhibitions. The firm was established for eighty-seven years, located at 7 Cimetiere Saint-Nicholas from 1847-1854 before moving to 114 Rue du Temple. In 1867 the workshop moved to 10 Rue Charlot, where it continued to operate after his death under the guidance of his wife and son until 1934.
