A Fine Napoleon III Gilt and Patinated Bronze Gueridon, c. 1863, by Emile Louis Picault (French, 1833-1915), in the Etruscan taste, the dish-shaped top framing a circular gilt-bronze relief plaque of the Athenian Hostages at Syracuse, inscribed 'Olympias XCI Graeci Syracusis Captivit', signed 'E. Picault / Exposition des Arts 1863', the cast bamboo stem on triangular plinth, headed by griffins and mounted with leaves, on outswept legs, the birdlike feet resting on pads, height 31.5in., diameter 14 in.
