A Fine Pair of American Rococo Carved Rosewood Armchairs, mid-19th c , possibly Mitchell and Rammelsberg, Cincinnati, the reticulated crest carved with a pair of birds, oval backs, padded arms, bowed seats and cabriole legs ending in casters, nicely upholstered in rose silk damask, height 44.5in E6000-8000 Note: The naturalistic detail seen on the crests of these chairs is indicative of Cincinnati woodcarving influenced by German Black Forest traditions and also championed by Ben Pittman and brothers Henry and William Fry at the University of Cincinnati School of Design The voluptuous Rococo interpretation in these armchairs, lot 836, is strongly associated with the Mitchell and Rammelsberg (1847-1881) firm, which produced furniture in a wide range of styles including Renaissance Revival, Aesthetic, Egyptian Revival, and Rococo Reference: Anita Ellis, 'Cincinnati Art Furniture' The Magazine Antiques April 1982.
