Description:

A Fine Pair of American Rococo Laminated and Carved Rosewood Sidechairs, c. 1855-1860, attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, the heavily carved and pierced cartouche form padded backs over round seats, acanthus carved aprons with cabriole legs ending in casters, the whole carved with strapwork, flowers, fruit and oak branches, height 39 7-8 in., width 19.124in., depth 27.5in. E15000-25000 Provenance: High Museum, Atlanta; Virginia Carroll Crawford Coll. High Museum retains a sofa and two chairs in this pattern. Note: See Art & Enterprise, p. 88, pl. 44. The intricately carved and pierced backs seen in these chairs demonstrate the highest virtuosity for which the Belter firm was known. The carved design is related to the pattern known as Cornucopia and incorporates the addition of unusual strapwork elements in the crest. The round seats are also an interesting design feature. Reference: These chairs are illustrated courtesy of Sotheby Parke Bernet in Richard and Eileen Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th Century, p. 74.
