Description:

A Fine Paris Porcelain Polychrome and Stencil-Gilt Dinner Service, mid-19th c., signed "Boyer rue de la Paix 2", claret banding with periwinkle floral festoons linking gilt cartouches alternately containing a monogrammed "B" crested by a griffin head with the motto "Gaudeo" and finely painted floral examples, comprising 32 dinner plates, 18 dessert plates, a large tureen with undertray, a covered sauce tureen, 2 lozenge-shaped serving dishes, 2 compotes, 6 covered round vegetables, 2 large platters and a large circular charger, 66 pcs., en suite with preceding lot..

  • Notes: Note: The distinctive crest and monogram employed in the decoration of this service is indicative of the illustrious Brown Family of Rhode Island. The service was most likely commissioned by John Carter Brown (1797-1874) of Providence, RI to mark his marriage to Sophia Augusta Brown, née Browne, as their initials are intertwined in each monogrammed cartouche. An avid patron of the arts, Brown spent many years traveling throughout Europe, during which time this service was probably commissioned. As the son of Nicholas Brown, Jr. (1769-1841), the renowned American commercial leader for whom Brown University was named, John was made partner in the family commerce trade company of Brown & Ives in 1832. Upon the death of his father in 1841, John inherited management of the company as well as the family seat, a Georgian-style mansion originally built for Joseph Nightingale in 1792. The Nightingale-Brown House is a National Historic Landmark and presently houses the headquarters of the John Nicholas Brown Center and Brown University's program in public humanities.
