A Fine Set of Eight American Gothic Carved Mahogany Dining Chairs, c. 1835-1840, New York, possibly Phyfe and Sons, New York, comprising two armchairs and six side chairs, the shaped and pierced crests over arched stiles, trapezoidal seats, saber legs, retaining an old attractive finish and original upholstered seats. E8000-12000 Note: A table with a carved fan spandrel similar to that in the crest rail of lot 386 was advertised by Ginsburg & Levy, New York in Magazine Antiques, May 1961, p. 417. Another set of New York Gothic chairs by J & J.W. Meeks with seat and leg element analogous to this lot was used in the Lincoln administration's White House cabinet room (illustrated in John Pearce and Lorraine Pierce Magazine Antiques, "More on Meeks Cabinet Makers," July, 1966, p. 73, fig. 7.
