A Fine Set of Eight Federal Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1795, attributed to Henry Connelly, Philadelphia, the square backs with cockbeaded stiles and pierced urn and swag splats, serpentine over- upholstered seats, square tapering legs, tulip poplar secondary wood, height 36 in. E30000-50000 Note: An armchair made by Henry Connelly and conserved by the Henry Ford Museum with a back identical to the chairs in lot 348 is illustrated in Robert Bishop Centuries and Styles of the American Chair 1640-1970, p. 221, pl 311. Two Philadelphia armchairs and a side chair with this splat and back are found in the Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture, pp. 265-266, pl. 419, 421, 422. A side chair with identical back and similar legs to lot 348 was said to be one of six owned by Benjamin Franklin, by Wallace Nutting in Furniture Treasury, pl. 2384.
