Description:

A Fine Vieux Paris Gilt and Painted Porcelain Coffee and Tea Service, early-to-mid 19th c., marked only with impressed initials (L z) and ciphers (D 1), the large pieces painted with vignettes of domestic, barnyard and exotic animals, comprising 2 teapots, 1 coffeepot, 1 covered sugar, 1 creamer, large waste bowl, 2 cake plates, 12 dessert plates, 12 coffee cups, 12 demitasse cups, and 24 saucers, in all 72 pieces with lids, assorted; each piece individually painted E6000- 8000 Note: Similar vignettes of animals standing in simple landscapes date from at least as early as those on a breakfast set made by the Duc d'Angouleme's factory in c 1785, whose images these animals strongly recall, (Plinval de Guillebon, Paris Porcelain, 1770-1850, London, 1972, p 139); the Darte Brothers issued a series of African birds in c 1820 (p 202); but these animals and their stylized trees appear closest to the style of a decoration by Perche of c 1835 (p 308).
