A Fine William IV Sheffield Plate Surtout de Table, with presentation inscription "To the HONOURABLE CHARLES WILLIAM VISCOUNT MILTON M.P./To mark their sense of the distinguished manner in which he served as one of the representatives for the COUNTY OF YORK for the period of twenty-three years in five successive/PARLIAMENTS during which the principles of public Virtues inherited from his Father and Lord Rockingham have become still more inseparably connected by his own/consistent example with the name and character of the "HOUSE OF WENTWORTH/THIS TESTIMONIAL A SPECIMEN OF THEIR STAPLE MANUFACTURE IS GRATEFULLY PRESENTED BY THE INHABITANTS OF SHEFFIELD & ITS NEIGHBORHOOD OCTOBER 1832"; tripartite oblong form with floral and foliate border, lion's mask and paw feet, inset mirror plate, height 3 7/8 in., width 53 5/8 in., depth 23 1/8 in., presented on a later Louis XVI-style low table, overall height 20 1/2 in., width 54 1/2 in., depth 24 in.
Note: Charles William Wentworth-Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton (1786-1857), later the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam, was a member of the prominent Wentworth family of Whig statesmen, the most notable being his uncle, Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730-1782), who served two terms as Prime Minister under George III. The family home, Wentworth-Woodhouse, stands today and is the largest privately-owned home in Britain.
