A French Belle ?poque Bronze Figural Group of a Bacchante on a Goat, mid-to-late 19th Century mounted on circular black and white marble plinth, overall height 20.25 in. E1000-1500 Note: This is a close variant of a celebrated sculptural group of 1796 by Philippe-Laurent Roland (French, 1746-1816), of which the terracotta maquette is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and a superb bronze of 1798, signed by both Roland and Marchand is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This present cast is inscribed 'Claude Michel', for Clodion, at bottom front; but the original model is in fact by Roland.
