Description:

A French Engraving, "Le Depart des Filles de Joie Pour l'Amerique", late 18th/early 19th c., sight 20 1/4 in. x 24 1/4 in., framed. Reference: @http://international.loc.gov@ Note: During the Regency of Philippe, Duc d'Orleans (1674-1723) more than 200 young women of questionable reputation - les filles de joie - were released from imprisonment in the Salpêtriére (where they were serving terms for crimes such as begging, vagabondage, and prostitution) and transported to the Mississippi Valley. These women are not to be confused with the virtuous young girls of marriageable age, mostly orphans raised in the General Hospital of Paris, who were sent to Canada and New Orleans.
