A George III Mahogany Architect's Desk, c. 1780, related to a design by Gillows, the rectangular hinged and ratcheted top inset with tooled leather, above a secretaire drawer enclosing a leather-lined writing slide with central ratcheted slope, over a recess fitted with lidded compartments inlaid with alphabet labels of satinwood and ebony, the base with recessed paneled kneehole door flanked by pedestals of three drawers, the opposite side finished with faux drawers and cupboards, the molded plinth base on recessed casters, height 381-2 in., width 491-2 in., depth 27 in. E8000-12000 Note: The large, raised drafting surface and inlaid interior compartments are similar to those on a Gillows design for a "Bureau Writing Table, 1789" commissioned by the Earl of Shrewsbury.
