A Georgia Coin Silver "Kings Pattern" Soup Ladle, Josiah Penfield (1785-1828), Savannah, marked "PENFIELD&CO." in rectangle; length 13 1/4 in Provenance: Collection of Steven Cabot Barnes Harvey. Exhibited: High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA. Note: Penfield learned the silversmith craft and its business aspects from his uncle, Isaac Marquand. In 1810 he became a partner in the firm Marquand, Paulding & Penfield. Penfield took over the business in 1816 and continued to operate it until 1820 when he received his cousin, Fredrick Marquand of New York into the partnership J. Penfield & Co. In 1826 Marquand returned to New York but J. Penfield & Co. continued, with Moses Eastman replacing Marquand as Penfield's partner. Reference: Cutten, George Barton.
