Description:

A Good American Gilt Brass and Marble Girandole Garniture, c. 1850, Boston, marked Wm. Shaw of Boston with 1848 patent date, consisting of a three-branch central candelabrum and two single socket sides, each foliate standard fronted by a model of Mount Auburn cemetery's Gothic Revival chapel, on stepped marble bases, with trumpet vine prism rings and original prisms, retaining original surface, height 16 in., width 15 .75in. E700-1000 Note: See H. Parrott Bacot, Nineteenth Century Lighting, p.188, and Donald C. Pierce, Art & Enterprise, p. 64-65. Note: Most surviving American girandoles are designed in the Rococo taste. However, William Shaw's inclusion of the Mount Auburn chapel in this garniture is a foray into Gothic Revival style.
