Lot 250
A Good American Gothic Carved Oak Half Tester Bed, c. 1840, probably Philadelphia, the rectangular cove-molded cornice with reticulated brackets and tracery, the headboard with three rectangular panels and crocket crest, faceted posts, rails with quatrefoil brackets and appliqués, foot post with massive pineapple finials, height 98 1/2 in., length 78 1/2 in., width 57 in.
PLEASE NOTE: The architectonic design and Classical Gothicism of this bed bespeak a cabinetmaker well-versed in the vocabularies of both Classical and Gothic styles such as Crawford Riddell, who is best known for the "Henry Clay" bedroom suite for many years at Rosedown Plantation, the Turnbull family's c. 1835 home in St. Francisville, Louisiana. The tracery embellishments on the tester, the use of narrowly spaced panels on the headboard, octagonal posts and inclusion of elaborately carved embellishments such as the finials on the footposts of this bed all relate closely to those on the Riddell Rosedown bed. Reference: Howe and Warren, The Gothic Style in America 1830-1870, p.52., for an illustration and discussion of the Riddell "Rosedown" bed.
