A Good American Late Classical Carved Mahogany Sideboard, c. 1830, Philadelphia, attributed to Anthony Quervelle, the central backboard with mirror flanked by cornucopiae, the marble top dropped center with serving slide and bolection drawer over a pair of doors ornamented with a convex fan, the pedestals each with a bolection drawer projecting above a door flanked by columns, on acanthus carved feet ending in flattened balls, height 53 in., width 72 in., depth 22.5 in. E5000-7000 Note: Anthony Quervelle (1789-1856) established his Philadelphia firm in 1820, and became a major proponent of American Classical furniture in America. Several features seen in this example relate closely to work by Quervelle. The carved cornucopia brackets relate closely to those in a Quervelle sideboard conserved at Winterthur. The fan panel in the center cabinet and the acanthus carved cup and cover feet appear in case furniture illustrated in Smith, The Magazine Antiques, 'The Furniture of Anthony Quervelle, Part IV Some Case Pieces' January 1974, fig. 7-8, pl. I, pp. 185-186. A sideboard of similar proportions attributed to Quervelle sold in these salesooms as lot 728, on October 2, 2004.
