Description:

A Good American Late Classical Mahogany Secretary/Bookcase, c. 1830, New York, in two parts, the flared cornice with recessed arched frieze, divided paneled glass doors flanked by engaged columns with acanthus-carved Ionic capitals, the base with three drawers over fold down writing surface opening to a fitted interior over the cupboard flanked by conforming columns raised on acanthus-carved paw feet, height 109in., width 53in., depth 24in. E6000-9000 Note: The New York influence of the design of this secretary bookcase can be seen in the recessed arched frieze, use of brass moldings, the configuration of the secretary drawer and the manner of the carved paw feet. The fine dovetailing and use of choice mahogany suggests a New York City cabinetmaking firm, such as J. & J.W. Meeks. However, George Meade in Albany also produced related examples.
