A Good American Neo-Grec Walnut, Ebonized, Burled and Gilt-Incised Portfolio Cabinet, late 19th Century New York, the top opening to form an adjustable shelf above a fall front and conforming back, each side with a bronze roundel, one a scholar, the other a putto, set within an ebonized incised reserve, the sides with ebonized bosses and burled panels on trestle base, scrolled shoe feet, height 42 in., width 36 in , depth 17 in. (top). E4000-6000 Note: The small, specialized case form and the use of applied walnut and ebonized structural elements with incised gilt and ebonized decoration and bronze roundels in lot 172 are indicative of New York firms such as Kimbel & Cabus and Killian Brothers. The spoke incised roundels on the cabinet sides and the scrolled feet on this lot are particularly reminiscent of those on a Kimbel & Cabus metamorphic library chair from the firm's c. 1875 photo catalog.
