Description:

A Good French Bronze of "Pluto and Persephone", 19th c., after François Girardon (French, 1628-1715), variegated patina with some oxidation, height 43 1/2 in., width 18 in., depth 15 in.

  • Notes: Note: In 1674 the French minister Colbert ordered, in the Grande Commande, a series of life-size marble groups after designs by Le Brun for the Park at Versailles; this group of "Pluto and Persephone", executed by Girardon between 1677 and 1699, was intended as Allegory of Fire (the original marble, now in the Museum at Versailles is 2.60 meters high). It has been replicated in bronzes of this same approximate size; among the many museum examples is a fine cast in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (1986.74.1).
