Lot 406
A Good George III Chinoiserie Scarlet-Ground Secretary/Bookcase, 18th c., molded cornice above a pair of raised panel doors opening to adjustable shelving, the slant front desk opening to a fitted interior with arched paneled prospect door flanked by half-columned letter slides, drawers and compartments, sliding decorated well, three graduated molded drawers on shaped bracket feet, retaining much original decoration, height 88 in., width 36 in., depth 21 in. E12000/18000 Note: The provenance of this desk indicates that it was sold to a prominent New Orleans collector as being English and "japanned" in Boston. The relatively simple characteristics and manner of the decoration lend credibility to this theory. An informed article "Boston Japanned Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art," by Hecksher and Safford is found in the Magazine Antiques, May 1986, pp. 1048-1062.
