Lot 91
Description:
A Good Italian or French Bronze Figure of a Running Maiden, Possibly Atalanta, probably late 18th/early 19th c., the running figure caught in mid-stride, height 10 1/4 in., width 7 3/4 in., depth 3 3/4 in., on a turned rosso antico marble plinth, overall height 14 in.
- Notes: Note: Whereas Atalanta paused in her race with Hippomedes to retrieve a golden ball, this figure appears to hold the remnant of a spear or bow, which might suggest her identity as a "Companion to Diana". Her pose is a close variant to that of a Running Apollo, from a bronze "Pursuit of Daphne" group of c. 1700, variously attributed to Antoine Coysevox, Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi, or Giovanni Battista Foggini (Jacques Fischer, The French Bronze, New York, Knoedler & Co., 1968, no. 33: casts in Dresden, Braunschweig, Moscow and London, V & A Museum). The present bronze also relates to a French figure of "Fire", again of c. 1700, once also attributed to G.B. Foggini (Italian, 1652-1725), but now more plausibly ascribed to Francois Lespingola (French, 1644-1705).
