A Good Set of Eight American Classical Carved Mahogany Gondola Dining Chairs in the manner of Duncan Phyfe, c. 1815-25, each having a barrel-form crestrail, outswept stiles, slip seat and curved seat rail, raised on sabre legs, height 33 in. E4000-6000 Note: Nearly identical chairs were supplied by Duncan Phyfe to the eminent New York lawyer Samuel Foot in 1837 and are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Another New York chair is illustrated in Voorsanger and Howat Art and the Empire City, p. 518. English antecedents for this form are found in Nancy McClelland, Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency, pl. 260.
