Description:

A Good Southern Cypress Cabinet, probably mid-19th c., Mississippi, large plank top, paneled door, shaped skirt, bracket feet, old weathered surface, four interior shelves, old pencil inscription, " J.N. Evans, Jr." inside door, height 71 3/4 in., width 38 1/2 in., depth 14 1/2 in. Provenance: Greenwood Plantation, Pinkneyville, Mississippi. Exhibited: ""Brandons, Barrows, and Bedgoods"" Wilkinson County Museum, Woodville, Mississippi, 1992 Note : This rare cabinet may have been made in the wood shop at Greenwood. Hammered fasteners, and the iron box lock on this case are likely the same source as the cabinet itself. The case, with inset lock, tongue and groove backboards, cockbeaded panels, and 18th c. derived skirt, is influenced by Anglo-American cabinetmaking rather than French/Sainte Domingue traditions used downriver closer to New Orleans. The pencil inscription relates to John Nathaniel Evans, Jr. (1832-1883), grandson of the original owner of Greenwood. J.N. Evans, Jr. owned Greenwood c. 1865-1883."
