A Gothic Revival Highly Carved and Gilded Overmantel Mirror, early 19th c., spired paneled stiles, arched crocketed crest, lancet and quatrefoil frieze, lancet and trefoil base, retaining the original gilt surface, in estate condition, height 71 in., width 68 in.~ Note: Pine secondary wood.

  • Notes: Note: Based on prototypes of the English "Perpendicular" period of Gothic architecture, the wide arch and fretwork seen in this mirror are very similar to those on an overmantel mirror designed by A.Welby Pugin illustrated in Ackerman's Repository of Arts, (July 1, 1827) vol. 10, pl. 5 and another drawing on page 41 of Pugin's 1841 The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture Reference: http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/teach/gothic/pugin.html and http://special.lib.gla.ac.uk/teach/gothic/furniture.html
