A Kuba (Bacouba, Bakuba) Altar Figure of a Seated King, Ndop, Democratic Republic of the Congo, seated cross-legged on a trunk-like stand with flanking arms (one missing) resting on a protruding girth, the torso with allover scarification, the thick neck supporting a flattened face with inset bulging eyes and a triangular, protruding nose, height 33 in., presented on a square plinth.
- Provenance: Provenance: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Note: Royal figures, ndop, such as the one offered here, are the idealized representations of Kuba kings. Considered the soul double, it is believed that whatever happens to the king himself happens to the likeness as well.
