Description:

A Large Antique Bronze Plantation Bell, 1887, Buckeye Bell Foundry, Vanduzen & Tift, Cincinnati, now mounted in a modern wooden harness, height 30 in., diameter 28 in E4000-6000 Provenance: Found in New Roads, Louisiana Note: Established by George Washington Coffin in 1837, the Buckeye Foundry operated in Cincinnati for over a century, producing monumental bells and chime systems for American churches, fire houses, town halls, ships and bridges including a bell used in the 1895 Cotton States Exposition in Atlanta The loudness, 'hum length', and great size achievable with bells of bronze (in contrast to those of iron) offset their greater expense The convenient navigability of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers between the Buckeye Foundry and the southern Louisiana parish where this bell was discovered, indicates the early owner of this bell had access to the foundry's wares.
