A Large English Pottery Commemoration Mug, c. 1881, commemorating the assassination of President Garfield, black stencil on craquelured earthenware, the President's portrait in an oval cartouche flanked by American and British flags, surmounted by an eagle holding a laurel wreath in his claws, noted on back Garfield's date of birth, date of his election to office, Shot by Guiteau, July 2nd, 1881, and date of death September 19th, 1881, with an acrostic poem lauding the President and comparing his life to that of Albert (Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria, also deceased), the first letter of each of the 8 lines spelling Garfield, height 4.25in.
