  • Notes: Note: Charles Leeds operated a large foundry employing over 400 people at what is now 923 Tchoupitoulas Street in New Orleans in the mid-19th c. A maker of steel cotton bale presses and other agricultural items like the sugar kettle seen here, the foundry converted to military production in 1861 producing ironclad ships including the CSS Mississippi, and continued to produce arms for anti-Reconstruction forces after the war. Leeds was elected the 33rd Mayor of New Orleans in 1874.
