A Louis Philippe Carved Rosewood Parlour Suite, mid-19th c., French or American, consisting of a sofa, three sidechairs and one armchair each having shaped crest rail, serpentine apron, finely carved cabriole legs raised on casters, sofa height 40in., width 67in., depth25in. E2000-3000 Provenance: Descended in the family of Joshua G. Baker. Note: Joshua G. Baker was a native of St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, who opposed secession and remained a staunch Unionist throughout the Civil War. hcse was elected to the U.S. Congress from Union-occupied Louisiana, but refused to travel to Washington to takehis seat. In 1868 hcse was appointed military governor of Louisiana. At various times hcse also served as a judge in St. Mary Parish and in Orleans Parish.
