Lot 682
A Louis XV-Style Kingwood, Ormolu Mounted and Tooled Leather Cartonnier, early 20th c., the upper bomb‚ section with shaped drawers fronted with tooled leather and lined with marbled paper, the base with tambour doors opening to shelves, ending in foliate mounted cabriole legs, height 71 in., width 53 in., depth 17.5in E10000-12000 Note: The cartonnier or 'papers' cabinet represents a very popular form in the history of French furniture and design from the time of Louis XIV through the Revolution and into the early Empire The form traditionally was mounted to a bureau plat or another small surface, and was intended to contain paper and other writing materials adjacent to the desk In some instances the cartonnier was a separate entity, not joined to the writing surface itself This rare example illustrates the tendency to separate the cartonnier from the desk and place it on top of a convenient side cabinet Thus, the cabinet cartonnier alongside the bureau plat would have formed a handsome and useful suite For a similar example see Christopher Payne, Nineteenth-Century Furniture, (Suffolk, 1981) p 128, no 301 & 302.
