E1800-2500 Note: A nearly identical chair is documented from Thomas Jefferson's furnishings at Monticello and currently conserved by the Thomas Jefferson Memorial foundation. See Susan Stein, The Worlds of Thomas Jefferson at Monticello, p. 300. Some histories indicate Jefferson purchased chairs from James Monroe who acquired furniture at auction while Minister to France (1794-1796 .
