A Louisiana Inlaid Mahogany Armoire, early 19th c., molded cornice, frieze with interlaced inlay over paneled doors, false medial stile with urn inlay, fiche hinges, shelf interior with medial belt of drawers, paneled sides, scalloped skirt, cabriole legs, height 86 in., width 59 in., depth 23 in Provenance: Estate of JoAnn Kuebel Williams, Metairie, LA. Note: The distinctive urn patera on the false stile, the configuration of the side panels, and the shape of the front and side skirts on this armoire share characteristics with an example in the Stromeyer Collection, which according to oval tradition once belonged to Gov. William C.C. Claiborne. The proportions, the door and side panels, the drawer configuration and skirt pattern on this armoire also relate closely to the elements seen on an armoire from the collection of Dr. George Crozat, sold by New Auction Company as lot 338, September 30, 2006.
