  • Provenance: Provenance: Part of the original furnishings of the Carnot Posey House, Woodville, Mississippi~ Note: General Carnot Posey, C.S.A. (1818-1863) was a native of Woodville, Mississippi, who graduated from Centenary College and the University of Virginia Law School, and began practicing Law around 1840 At this time, he also initiated the construction of his Greek Revival style house, which was finished in 1845 In 1846, Posey volunteered in the Mexican-American War, serving in the same regiment as Jefferson Davis; the two became lifelong friends. After serving as U.S. District Attorney for Southern Mississippi, Posey was appointed Colonel in 1861, fighting in the battles of Corinth, First Manassas, Ball's Bluff, and Cross Keys. He was quickly promoted to Brigadier General and served in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Bristoe Station, where he was wounded and later died of infection. Posey's widow sold their house in Woodville in 1874 Although the building was somewhat changed by its subsequent owners, it is largely intact according to the original plans of the house. The armoire pictured here is a unique piece from the historic building from the time of Posey himself.
