A Mississippi Coin Silver Repoussé Covered Sugar Bowl, George Macpherson, active Natchez c. 1843-1871, marked "G.MACPHERSON" in rectangle, vase form, domed lid with strawberry finial, branch-form handles with strawberries, the body chased with lotus leaves, shells and scrolls, diapered ground, foot with rolled band of decoration, engraved with Gothic monogram "GCB", height 9 3/4 in., weight 22.25 troy ozs.

  • Notes: Note: Born in Scotland, silversmith George Macpherson is documented as working in Natchez as early as 1843 In 1849 he bought the shop on Main Street that would be his business address until he sold the property in 1872, after he had moved back to Scotland. His home in Natchez was "Cherokee", the handsome neo-classical townhouse which stands today. The coffeepot and hot water pitcher made by Macpherson for Governor Gerard C. Brandon, and illustrated on page 35 of Nineteenth Century Natchez-made Silver, are of identical design to the sugar bowl offered here.
