Description:

A Monumental American Classical Brass Inlaid Carved Mahogany Sofa, early 19th c., Philadelphia, acanthus carved, scrolled crest rail, massive acanthine scrolled arms terminating in bosses, seat rail with rosewood banded brass inlaid panels above winged paw feet, height 36 in., width 88 in., depth 25 1/2 in.

  • Notes: Note: The monumental proportions, distinctive wing bracket and bas relief acanthus-carved arms on this sofa are very similar to those on a Philadelphia mahogany illustrated in Feld. Of the Newest Fashion, Masterpieces of American Neo-Classical Decorative Arts, pp. 58-59, cat. 28 The brass inlaid panels on the seat rail of this sofa, probably imported from France, are very similar to those on a well known suite of dining room furniture made for noted Philadelphian Simon Gratz (1773-1839) and now conserved by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
