A Monumental American Highly Carved Walnut Hall Chair, c. 1840, probably Baltimore, the pierced scrolling crest surmounted by a finial, the arched top rail centered by an armorial, the backrest with C-scrolls, molded arms raised on volutes, hinged seat, the serpentine outlined front rail mounted by a cabochon, on beaded and acanthus carved legs, height 61.5in. E1500/2500 Note: This boldly designed chair of baronial proportions relates to a body of work ascribed to an unknown Baltimore maker or makers. Though stylistically the chair is closely related to the work of Alexander Roux of New York it incorporates Gothic and Renaissance elements into a more elaborate and utilitarian form.
