Lot 326a
A Newcomb College Art Pottery Matte Glaze Chamberstick, 1929, decorated by Anna Frances Simpson in the Espanol design, blue, green and yellow underglaze, base marked with Newcomb cipher, decorator's mark, Jonathan Hunt's potter's mark, reg. no. RO59 and shape no. 329, height 3 3/8 in. E1500-2500 Note: Included as catalogue no. 175 in Newcomb Pottery by Jessie Poesch (Schiffer, 1984) and in the traveling exhibtion prepared by Newcomb College in cooperation with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services. Note: According to Sadie Irvine, the so-called "Espanol" design was inspired by a late 18th century Spanish hand-carved mantel found in the French Quarter in the mid-1920's by Ellsworth Woodward. The appearance of the unusual motif on the candlestick form is extremely rare. Reference: Jessie Poesch, Newcomb Pottery: An Enterprise for Southern Women, 1895 1940 (Exton: Schiffer, 1984), 76.
