Description:

A Newcomb College Art Pottery Matte Glaze Vase, 1929, decorated by Sadie Irvine with Moon and Moss design, blue and green underglaze, base marked with Newcomb cipher, decorator's mark, Jonathan Hunt's potter's mark, reg. no. RS28 and shape no. 250, height 7 7/8 in. E4000 6000 Note: The "Moon and Moss" motif became the quintessential Newcomb depiction of the southern landscape. Ellsworth Woodward passionately described the scene in a 1938 speech entitled The Magic of New Orleans as follows: "When ...[one sees for the first time the unbelievably fantastic oak swathed in its mournful burden, ... and when he beholds the full moon rise behind that feathery scene, then indeed his cup is full."
