A Newcomb College Bookplate, by Sadie Irvine for Elizabeth Buncombe Palfrey, 5.25 in.x 2.5 in. E300-500 Note: Bookplates or ex libris ( "from the library") were created by several of the Newcomb College art students. The established programs in print-making and advertising arts combined with the 1913 introduction of bookbinding, led to an interest in creating bookplates. This bookplate by Sadie Agnes Estelle Irvine depicts a charming image of a young girl who was so engrossed with her book that she cast aside her doll. A student and then instructor, Irvine was one of the most accomplished of the Newcomb College artists and specialized in pottery decorations, watercolors and woodblock prints.
