A Pair of American Aesthetic Inlaid, Gilt-Incised Rosewood Side Chairs, late 19th c., attributed to Herter Brothers, New York, the crests with three geometrical inlaid panels, paired splats below, molded seat rail, outside stretchers, molded legs with slightly flared feet, possibly retaining the original crewel embroidered plush velvet upholstery, height 32 in.
- Notes: Note: Both chairs in this lot bear an impressed stamp "67181" under the seat rail, The Herter firm often stamped sequential numbers into items made for certain commissioned house furnishings. A similar stamp is on a side chair made by Herter for the Woodlands (Goodwin residence) in Hartford. These chairs are similar in form to a number of side chairs known from the Herter firm, including a rosewood chair at the Wadsworth Atheneum, an oak chair at the Vanderbilt Mansion, and an ebonized chair at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
