A Pair of American Classical Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, early 19th c., New York, each having a crotch-veneered crest rail, carved foliate scrolled splat, reeded stiles, trapezoidal slip seat, paneled rail, molded saber legs.
- Provenance: Provenance: General P. M. Wetmore, born 1798, died 1876, paper label affixed to seat rail. Note: Brigadier-General Prosper Montgomery Wetmore was born in 1798 in Stratford, Connecticut, but soon moved with his family to New York City. He worked in the dry goods trade until 1819, when he joined the 11th regiment of the state militia. Wetmore quickly worked his way up the ranks, becoming a Major in 1824, a Colonel in 1826, and a General sometime before the Civil War. In 1861, he founded the Union Defense Committee and acted as its Secretary until the end of the Civil War. Aside from his military career, Wetmore served as a regent of the University of New York, President of the American Art Union, and Secretary of the New York Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he was a popular speaker and writer, his poems published in magazines from the age of seventeen. His writings include the published volume, The Battle of Lexington and Other Poems, and the poems "Ambition", and "The Banner of Murat".
