Description:

A Pair of American Classical Inlaid and Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1825, Philadelphia, each crest with exotic light wood stringing, carved basket of fruit medial rail, trapezoidal seat, original seat frame, saber legs with projecting knees mounted by concentric bosses.
PLEASE NOTE: The inlaid crest rails and basket carved backs on this pair of chairs are closely related to those on the suite of six "Ruckman family" chairs from the collection of Donald Fennimore. Interestingly, the carved baskets on these chair are similar to carving on a bookcase bearing Quervelle's label at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. A pair of chairs nearly identical to those offered here, also attributed to Quervelle, were sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 206, July 22, 2006. Reference: Smith.
