A Pair of American Classical-Style Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, 19th c., possibly Ernest Hagan, New York, (in the manner of Duncan Phyfe), with figured tablet crests, carved horizontal splats, reeded stiles, seat rails, cane seats, saber legs, height 31 in., width 18 in., depth 19 in.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Acquired 2003 from the family of Rabbi Gersham Mendes Seixas (1746-1816), first Rabbi of New York City. Note: The fashionable New York firm of Ernest Hagen (fl. 1858-1905) restored and offered old furniture described in advertising seen in these chairs, which are similar to those in a suite of side chairs by Phyfe for Abigail Lefferts Lott Zabriskie, c. 1830.
