A Pair of American Gothic Carved Mahogany Side Chairs, c. 1830-1840, possibly designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, the trefoil finialed and paneled stiles flanking an arched crest, spired splats with central arch, trapezoidal upholstered seats, paneled rail and blocked, paneled tapered legs, height 34 in. Note: The chairs in lot 482 are identical to two well known groups of New York mahogany chairs possibly designed by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892): A pair of chairs descended in the Cocke family (owners of the Davis designed Villa Belmead) is held in the Lee Anderson collection, New York. Two of a suite of fourteen dining chairs held by Hirschl & Adler is illustrated in Feld, In Pointed Style, p. 85, fig. 40.
