A Pair of American Renaissance Carved and Incised Walnut Armchairs, mid-19th c., in the manner of John Jelliff, Newark, New Jersey, having a shaped padded back, arms and seat, the stiles with pendant tassels, rounded seat rail with Greek key and fan, on turned fluted tapering legs E1000-1500 Note: The distinctive 'u' form back and use of tassel pendants on the stile corners of these armchairs, lot 713, echoes nearly identical elements in known Jelliff seating furniture, specifically a Jelliff parlor suite exhibited in the Newark Museum ( see Newark Museum, A Century of Revivals, 19th c American Furniture in the Newark Museum, pl 37-40, pp 45-48).
