A Pair of American Rococo Carved and Laminated Rosewood Side Chairs, mid-19th c., attributed to John Henry Belter, New York, floral crests, pierced oak leaf and acorn carving, shaped padded backs, serpentine floral-carved seat rails, rose-carved cabriole legs, scrolled toes, casters.

  • Provenance: Provenance: Acquired by Miss Ima Hogg from Dickson's Antique Mansion, New Orleans, LA, 1957; thence to Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Bayou Bend Collection, gift of Miss Ima Hogg. Note: These chairs have a similar "balloon" back profile and seat shape to chairs presented to the U.S. patent office by John Henry Belter in 1858 to protect his newly innovated laminate designs. Reference: The diminutive chair presented to the Patent Office by Belter is illustrated in Dubrow, American Furniture of the 19th Century, pp. 18-19.
