Lot 460
A Pair of American Rococo Laminated Rosewood Parlor Chairs, mid-19th c., attributed to J. & J.W. Meeks, New York, in the pattern known as Stanton Hall, the floral carved cartouche flanked by reticulated and scrolling stiles, shield-form back, the bowed seat on cabriole legs ending in casters; one chair without the padded arms, height 45 in. Note: A parlor suite attributed to the J. & J.W. Meeks firm in an identical pattern is part of the original collection at Stanton Hall, Natchez, Mississippi. Furniture and decorative arts in the Rococo Revival Style came into vogue in the lower Mississippi River Valley in the 1850s. Patrons in the South were not only influenced by high-style decoration in New York, but also partial to a mode that reflected the French culture persisting from the 18th and early 19th c.
