Lot 840
Description:
A Pair of Antique English Lead Sculptures of "Spring" and "Winter", probably Walter Gilbert (English/Scottish, 1871-1946), unsigned, one cradling a bird's nest, height 42 in., width 16 in., depth 10 1/2 in.; the other clutching a dead bird to his chest, height 41 in., width 12 in., depth 9 in., together with painted wood fluted columnar plinths, height of bases 28 in.
- Notes: Note: These charming lead statues represent two of the Four Seasons from the series produced by the "Bromsgrove Guild of Applied Arts", of which Gilbert was the founder and chief sculptor. They reveal evident influence of Baroque and Neo-Classical models, while also displaying a firm sense of figural and iconographic independence. "Winter", especially, with his vulnerable pose and affecting gestures, transmits a real sense of childish appeal. These are worthy three-dimensional parallels to the protagonists of J.M. Barrie, Kenneth Grahame, and A.A. Milne.
