Description:

A Pair of Continental Carved Figures of Saints, late 18th/early 19th c., in the style of the Late Baroque or Rococo, heights 45 1/2 in. and 42 in. Note: An extremely similar, smaller pair, offered at Heritage Auctions, Dallas, sale 5155, 21-23 Feb. 2014, lot 62226, height 31 in. Note: Michelangelo's possible influence--though distant, since these dramatic figures are three centuries later in style--is perhaps chiefly to be seen in the expressive physiognomies, above all in the dynamic handling of the beards: that of the downward-looking Saint, though translated from marble to wood, somewhat recalls the great seated figure of Moses with the Tablets of the Law. Both these energetic figures would formerly have clasped rods or staffs in their extended hands.
