A Pair of Continental Marble Figures of Pugilists Creugas and Damoxenos, probably mid-20th c., after Antonio Canova (Italian, 1757-1822) originals carved for the Museo Pio-Clementino in the Vatican, 1795-1801 and 1795-1806; former height 61 in., latter height 54 1/2 in., width 31 in., depth 15 5/8 in. and 15 5/8 in. respectively. Provenance: Didier Rabes, Paris, France, 1987 Note: These models became well-known after the Roman firm of Nelli placed copies of them at the entrance to the Italian section of the Manufacturers' Building of the Columbian World's Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
